Welcome to Boot Hill, please don't step on the headstones...

INTRODUCTION

Many tourists visit the Boothill Graveyard in Tombstone Arizona on a daily basis.  Many tourists stop by the counter and ask the sales clerk in the gift shop questions like… which part of the cemetery are the Earps buried in?  Where is Ike Clanton and Johnny Ringo buried? The answer they hear from the clerk amazes them most of the time. None of the Earps are buried in Tombstone, neither is Ike Clanton or even John Ringo.

Below are the people I know are buried in Boothill Graveyard in Tombstone. If I know how they died, the year and/or their occupations, I included that as well. Quite a few of the graves in Boot Hill are listed as unknown.

Thanks for visiting, Ike

BOOT HILL
A name given to the frontier cemetery because most of it's early occupants died with their boots on.  The name has had an appeal as part of the romantic side of the west and has become familiar as representing the violent end of a reckless life.  But to the westerner, Boot Hill was just a graveyard where there "wasn't nobody there to let em' down easy with their hats off."  Like the old saying, "There ain't many tears shed at a Boot Hill Buryin', and it is full of fellers that pulled their triggers before aimin'. "

BRIEF HISTORY OF THE GRAVEYARD

The early years of Tombstone's Boot Hill Graveyard (1879-1884) was originally called the "City Cemetery"  After the city built the Tombstone Cemetery on the west end of Allen Street, the "City Cemetery" was then called the old cemetery.  Sometime around 1929 and the towns first Helldorado Days, people started calling the "Old Cemetery" Boot Hill Graveyard.  For years Tombstone's Boot Hill has been spelled Boothill on the signs posted around the graveyard and in many history books. So where did the single word spelling come from?  I'm guessing a sign painter simply changed it to a single word spelling years ago without even knowing?  Boot Hill is listed in Websters dictionary as a noun with two seperate words spelled out.
